Post-Study Work Visa Changes from 16 November 2026

Immigration New Zealand has announced two changes for international graduates that take effect on Monday 16 November 2026: wider eligibility for the Post-Study Work Visa, and a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. This article sets out what INZ has published. It is general information, not advice on anyone's own situation.

Graduate diploma holders with a bachelor's degree

From 16 November 2026, INZ says Post-Study Work Visa eligibility extends to graduates who have completed an NZQCF level 7 graduate diploma, studied full-time in New Zealand for the full duration of the qualification and enrolled in it for the full duration, and who hold a bachelor's degree completed in New Zealand or overseas. INZ says cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning do not count.

INZ says this visa can be issued for the time spent studying the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 1 year. Along with the graduate diploma, INZ asks for a copy of the bachelor's degree certificate and an official academic transcript.

Postgraduate diplomas and Master's degrees

INZ says an eligible Postgraduate Diploma (level 8) may lead to a 1-year Post-Study Work Visa, and an eligible Master's degree (level 9) to a 3-year visa. At least 30 weeks of full-time study are needed in the qualification the visa is based on; for a Master's, while enrolled in the Master's programme itself.

The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa

INZ is launching a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa on 16 November 2026. INZ says it gives 6 months of open work rights to graduates of NZQCF level 5 to 7 qualifications, studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks, that do not make them eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa. Applications must be made within 3 months of the student visa expiring.

INZ says a person can hold only 1 Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, and holders cannot support a partner for a work visa.

One Post-Study Work Visa per person

INZ says an individual can only be granted 1 Post-Study Work Visa, even if later study is at the same or a higher level. From 16 November 2026, applications for both visas are made through enhanced Immigration Online.
